چکیده

Two efficiency-based grid refinement strategies are investigated for adaptive finite element solution of partial differential equations. In each refinement step, the elements are ordered in terms of decreasing local error, and the optimal fraction of elements to be refined is determined based on efficiency measures that take both error reduction and work into account. The goal is to reach a pre-specified bound on the global error with a minimal amount of work. Two efficiency measures are discussed, work times error and accuracy per computational cost. The resulting refinement strategies are first compared for a one-dimensional model problem that may have a singularity. Modified versions of the efficiency strategies are proposed for the singular case, and the resulting adaptive methods are compared with a threshold-based refinement strategy. Next, the efficiency strategies are applied to the case of hprefinement for the one-dimensional model problem. The use of the efficiency-based refinement strategies is then explored for problems with spatial dimension greater than one. The work times error strategy is inefficient when the spatial dimension, d, is larger than the finite element order, p, but the accuracy per computational cost strategy provides an efficient refinement mechanism for any combination of d and p.

A POSTERIORI ERROR ESTIMATES OF hp-FEM FOR OPTIMAL CONTROL PROBLEMS

Finite element approximation plays an important role in the numerical methods of optimal control problems. There have been extensive theoretical and numerical studies for the finite element approximation of various optimal control problems. However the literature is too huge to even give a very brief review here. In recent years, the adaptive finite element method has been extensively investiga...

Multi-Level hp-Adaptivity: High-Order Mesh Adaptivity without the Difficulties of Constraining Hanging Nodes

hp-refinement schemes have proven to be an excellent approach to locally adapt the accuracy of a Finite Element discretization. However, the implementation of hp-adaptivity remains challenging as hanging nodes, edges, and faces have to be constrained to ensure compatibility of the shape functions. For this reason, most hp-code frameworks restrict themselves to 1-irregular meshes to ease the imp...

hp Adaptive finite elements based on derivative recovery and superconvergence

In this paper, we present a new approach to hpadaptive finite element methods. Our a posteriori error estimates and hp-refinement indicator are inspired by the work on gradient/derivative recovery of Bank and Xu [12,13]. For element τ of degree p, R(∂ uhp), the (piece-wise linear) recovered function of ∂ pu is used to approximate |ε|1,τ = |ûp+1−up|1,τ , which serves as our local error indicator...

How High a Degree is High Enough for High Order Finite Elements?

High order finite element methods can solve partial differential equations more efficiently than low order methods. But how large of a polynomial degree is beneficial? This paper addresses that question through a case study of three problems representing problems with smooth solutions, problems with steep gradients, and problems with singularities. It also contrasts hadaptive, p-adaptive, and h...
